Supporting our local community, to prevent food waste

Following the Covid-related cancellation of the recent Saints FC game , our teams quickly redistributed 700 sandwiches to our local community in order to limit food waste.

We were gearing up to support families attending the Holidays, Activities and Food Fund event at the Saints FC game, via the provision of healthy packed lunches, when we heard that it had been cancelled due to Covid. The tickets were a brilliant opportunity for children eligible for Free School Meals to experience the incredible atmosphere of St Mary's Stadium and support their local team!

Unfortunately, along with many other football games, the game was cancelled. To ensure that the sandwiches and food did not go to waste, we worked with our local charity network to ensure that they would be distributed quickly - and to communities who would really benefit from them.

Via our own Care service, Social Care in Action, Society of Saint James, Above Bar Church and Two Saints sandwiches were distributed to vulnerable and elderly adults receiving Meals on Wheels, University Southampton Hospitals for discharges and their nursing stations, food banks, homeless hostels, day centres and rough sleeper support teams. Our teams were delighted to not let the cancellation result in wastage, and it was especially important that they supported some of those most in need in our community. Turkey sandwiches all round!

We look forward to hearing about the reschedule of the game, and continuing to support HAF funded activities over the Christmas period at MAST for the Panto, and an event day at Active Nation's The Quays.
