Care Meals gets the spotlight on BBC Radio Solent

In support of our Meals on Wheels week and our Winter fundraising campaign, our Deputy CEO, Martin Orman, joined Lou Hannan on BBC Radio Solent on the 18th November, 2021.

Martin has overseen our Care Meals service for quite some time... but the recent years have sure shown some unprecedent demands on the service. The pandemic resulted in widespread shielding amongst the community, and the need for support with hot food became greater. The calls to our Meals on Wheels service spiked instantly as lockdown was announced with individuals and their families asking for our help.

Many of our team themselves were asked to shield or in vulnerable age groups, so we were fortunate to be able to call on the assistance on our friends at Social Care in Action and Vivid Homes to ensure that the our driver team was well resourced to cope with the rapid increase in need.

Whilst the service appears to have resumed pre-Covid levels, its been a slow trickle back down to our previous numbers. We are carefully watching the impact on the latest Covid developments, and are geared up to respond to any changing need that the Southampton community needs.
